What is magazine?

A magazine is somewhat similar to a book but instead contains periodical publications on different subjects which is printed or published. Magazine has become very prominent since it,s introduction in the late 17th century.

HISTORY

The earliest example of a magazine after the introduction of printing press in 1440 was the literary and philosophy magazine created by a german poet johan rist named “Erbauliche Monaths Unterredungen”. This was launched in germany in 1663. This was widely recognised when first introduced as it grasped people,s attention.

A publication similar to today,s magazines seemed visible in the year 1672, when a french author Jean Donneau de Vize created “Le Mercure Galant”. It curbed subjects related to literature, theatre, drama and court events. This concept then gained recognition in europe and these were afterwards copied. The first women,s magazine “ladie’s mercury” was published in 1693 in london.

In “Gazette Burlesque” jean loret combined the weekly news of music, dance, arts etc from 1650 to 1665 into a magazine. In 1684, exiled frenchman pierre bayle published “Novelles de la republique des lettres” in the netherlands to escape french censorships.

Magazines flourished after napolean left in 1815. Most were based in paris and most emphasized on literature, poetry and stories.in times of political crisis they expressed and helped shape the views of their readership and thereby were major elements in changing political culture. Moreover in turkey the Moniteur ottoman was a gazette written in french and first published in 1831 on the order of mahmud the second. It was the first official gazette of the ottoman empire, edited by alexandre blacque at the expense of the sublime porte.

In USA in the 1800s mids, monthly magazines gained popularity. They were general interests to begin, containing some news, vignettes, poems, history, political events and social discussion.unlike newspapers, they were more of a monthly record of current events along with entertaining stories, poems and pictures. Then throughout the 20th century the magazines flourished even further more and were advertised as well as it was an era of mass media.

Q3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

Ans. At the beginning of this project with no experience as to what complications the foundation portfolio held in store for me, I found myself apprehensive upon approaching this section of my media studies course. Over the course of three months, my production skills developed in both the research and planning of the magazine in general. I started off as a basic who only new few basic tools of Photoshop but gradually I got a hang of it.

The pre-production stage demanded some research into the genre of my magazine and all the other magazines related to it and had to look into the codes and conventions through different presentations on sites such as prezi and slide share. With thorough research into my genre coined “hip hop” I also worked on the analysis of content pages, double spread and front covers of different magazines. The analysis of the magazine is very essential to help out the layout and conventions of the magazine. I also did some research on the font styles and the color schemes of different music magazines and jotted down some notable key points. With the progression of these components I had a clear idea of the magazine in general and made help of such references in the making of my magazine.

Before the production process of the magazine began I had to make sure that I was quite handy with the use of camera angles etc. in addition, I learned the elements of photography such as following leading lines, rule of thirds, framing the subject and depth of field, also capturing some photos following the rules to incorporate those techniques, when I photograph for my magazine so that they don’t turn out a usual boring style. I further watched some YouTube videos which helped me while sorting out the Photoshop skills of me. I downloaded filmora and light room but faced some issues while handling the software thus I made use of canva as suggested by my teacher which was very handy and made my production process smoother. I also made a mood board of my magazine just to get an idea on what kind of layout I wanted in my magazine. This included the front cover, double spread and content page. Moreover after my research and analysis I added some of my work in preliminary task which included mock covers which are the samples I made. Furthermore I added the shoot and bts in final task.

When I was done with my shoot I made use of canva when it came to the editing process. Canva made this whole process far easier than photo shop. My masthead and barcodes etc were made by the help of canva too. Also when working on the survey I wanted to be free of the hurdle of printing a questionnaire and circulating it around so I made use of the app survey monkey. I made a survey of 10 questions and circulated around what Sapp and even emailed to different people.’

When it came to the marketing of the product I not only learned how to make and run a blog but also how to successfully advertise a product to the audience by employing enigmatic and attractive content on the cover pages to lure the audience into buying your product. A lot of marketing techniques were adapted which helped me to develop advertising skills. When it came to the distribution of the magazine, I adapted some theories which helped me develop a much better sense of the media world. Mostly I learned the discipline and routine of working on long projects like these and time management as well. This was one long ride but I was able to ace this with a lot of determination and passion.

Q 2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?

Ans. During the research  and planning process of my music  magazine  called  ‘wired’, social media  networks such as what Sapp, instagram and twitter  were used  and questionnaires  conducted  to gain access to the preferences  of the target audience. I conducted a survey on survey monkey to take a feedback from the audience regarding their view on music magazine in general and their response was pretty eminent.

My product pretty much engages with the audience I have interacted as I have made use of different color schemes, color grading and different shades of color according to my genre of magazine. Moreover I kept in mind the name of magazine and likewise I have made use of music notes in my double spread and the content page and front cover has similar shades as well. The colors therefore used in the overall magazine speaks to the audience and connotes enthusiasm and exhilaration.

The language and expression used on the magazine is very simple, elegant and engaging. The keywords are highlighted with a different color on the cover lines, as such that it automatically denotes a meaning out of it. My masthead is very prominent in the magazine and gives the front cover an appealing idea. The cover lines have been used in different colors which adds or gives the magazine a scent of insolence. I have challenged a stereotypical way to target my audience that is by the use of bold colors in the magazine and it consequently attains the appealing nature to the magazine. The reason behind me challenging this stereotype was because of the society I live in. the society I live in doesn’t really appreciate the fact that women can be bold and be themselves in a magazine. I wanted to create awareness and wanted to neglect the idea of a gender being defined in a stereotypical way.

Further elaborating on how my magazine was promoted, as we know social media is an excellent tool when it comes to the marketing of the product, with demographics mainly catering to youth. Photography of my magazine was promoted on my instagram photography page and was circulated online as well. Twitter will also be used to further promote my magazine by starting trends on my page and people can drop their reviews in the suggestion box below my post. Moreover emerging talents and musicians could be featured in the magazine.

The distribution of the magazine has been kept in mind along with what type of people will be reading this type of magazine. Firstly it will be available in restaurants, coffee shops, cafes, newsstands, bookstores, libraries. Moreover the magazines will be available via online and even online payment methods just so that people could have easy access to the magazine. This would be very beneficial as we live in a computer generated world, where everyone is known as digital natives, who want their media to be fast, portable and active. A giveaway could be conducted as well on social media pages which could encourage the people to share the page with other people to buy the magazine along with free discount vouchers and something innovative could be introduced like the chance of winning an item or something. Moreover online stores could be collaborated with just so that my magazine could be on sale and all the buyers could buy my magazine along with free items. Apart from the social media platform I could arrange small meet and greets or maybe instagram live sessions as well just to promote my magazine. Live sessions could be done just before the launch or the release of my magazine. Moreover PR packages could be sent to different bloggers or you tubers who promote my magazine. The audience will be encouraged to have a two way communication, as readers will give feedbacks to any issues in the magazine or we will have an idea of what exactly they are trying to convey.

Q4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online- in this project?

Ans.  Hardware and software were the essential elements in the making of the magazine. The hardware used for my print media were laptop, camera, mobile phone and memory card. A high quality dslr was also used to take pictures while my mobile phone was used to take the evidences and behind the scenes of the shoot. My mobile phone was also used to edit my pictures. Moreover my laptop was used mainly to do all the blogging.

A lot of software and online applications were also used in the making of the magazine. Two of the most amazing software I used were canva and word press. Canva was used  to edit all my pictures used in the magazine. I tended to get familiar with adobe Photoshop and light room far before into the making of the magazine. Light room was a bit difficult to approach and adobe photo shop crashed over and over again until I came across this editing app canva which made my life a lot easier. It had all the myriad of tools available for a sophisticated but easy application for construction. The tools also weren’t too tough to remember or use which made it easy to navigate. This app helps in editing pictures in the best way possible and in a smoother way. I also made use of photo editor in the initial stages of my magazine. Word press was used as my blogging site. Another fact was that I first created by blogging site on blogspot but the layout of the site wasn’t just doing it so I created my account on wordpress afterwards. I chose Blogspot due to availability of various layouts and user friendly and easy to navigate interface. Other than that a lot of presentation websites were used in the making of the magazines like prezi and Microsoft power point. Prezi added an interesting touch to the existing dull way of producing presentations with its smooth navigation, various tools and a zoom in option if one wants to stress upon particular points.

Moreover I made use of survey monkey to generate a survey of about 10 questions and circulated around whatsapp and email. I wanted to get free from the hurdle of first printing out the survey and then giving out to people in person, this would’ve been time consuming. This was not only a quicker way to conduct the survey but also helped reduce my work as it generated the results and analyzed them automatically.

Moreover Google was of great help as I researched about my genre in detail and got hang of extensive data and information regarding my magazine. Furthermore all my data of the magazine was backed up in the memory card and also in my emails in case of an emergency. Softwares were of great help when it came to the preproduction and production of the magazine.

critical reflection Q1

Q 1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

Ans. My music magazine coined “wired” is a hip hop magazine which targets a younger audience. Representation of this particular social group was primarily triggered by analyzing an array of literary magazines featuring bold and dark color schemes. The overall look and the presentation of my follows the codes and conventions of a music magazine in general.

After going through ample of magazines regarding my genre and fully researching each and every thing, I moved on with my magazine. The main image of the magazine cover does conform to the conventions somewhat, the focus is conventionally being on the main image. My front cover basically features a full shot of myself holding a musical instrument. There is a direct eye contact of the image with the reader of the magazine just to give the reader full insight of the image. A hip hop driven life is about striving to be authentic, to find an original voice and express the reality of your situation. It wants you to listen to that inner voice, that inner self and be yourself at all costs. So I wanted my main cover to be all about the expression which could connote boldness. In addition, the color scheme I chose was in the shades of red, black and white, away from the usual color schemes displaying dark colors. After I circulated my survey I got an idea of what my audience actually looks for when it comes to the color schemes. I chose red because it symbolizes physical energy, passion and desire, along with black and white it gave out the strong scent of boldness

My double spread is mid shot with musical notes all over the image. In the recent years the trend of music notes have been increasing so I decided to go with this one because it looks esthetic. I wanted my double spread to immediately catch the audience’s attention. My main article features an exclusive interview of myself and wanted to keep the layout of the article a bit simple. My content page had full shot as well and according to some responses regarding my magazine people thought that the content page was giving the boldest vibes. It included a section for contact information was essential as it allows the young audience to explore and submit their talent and be appreciated for their effort with those who share their interests.

Moving on with the name of my magazine I wanted to go for something unique so I did some research and came up with wired because it suited my concept. I wanted to create awareness and wanted to neglect the idea of a gender being defined in a stereotypical way. I have challenged a stereotypical way to target my audience that is by the use of bold colors in the magazine and it consequently attains the appealing nature to the magazine. The reason behind me challenging this stereotype was because of the society I live in. the society I live in doesn’t really appreciate the fact that women can be bold and be themselves in a magazine
