I took a lot of inspirations/ideas for my magazine because without these there is a possibility of a magazine not going well. From renown magazines to magazines that haven’t been able to make it globally each provides something even a small glimpse makes a magazine unique in it’s own way. i made sure that i grabbed as much information as i could to make sure my front cover, double spread and contents page go well. right below are all the magazines that inspired me.
A magazine is somewhat similar to a book but instead contains periodical publications on different subjects which is printed or published. Magazine has become very prominent since it,s introduction in the late 17th century.
HISTORY
The earliest example of a magazine after the introduction of printing press in 1440 was the literary and philosophy magazine created by a german poet johan rist named “Erbauliche Monaths Unterredungen”. This was launched in germany in 1663. This was widely recognised when first introduced as it grasped people,s attention.
A publication similar to today,s magazines seemed visible in the year 1672, when a french author Jean Donneau de Vize created “Le Mercure Galant”. It curbed subjects related to literature, theatre, drama and court events. This concept then gained recognition in europe and these were afterwards copied. The first women,s magazine “ladie’s mercury” was published in 1693 in london.
In “Gazette Burlesque” jean loret combined the weekly news of music, dance, arts etc from 1650 to 1665 into a magazine. In 1684, exiled frenchman pierre bayle published “Novelles de la republique des lettres” in the netherlands to escape french censorships.
Magazines flourished after napolean left in 1815. Most were based in paris and most emphasized on literature, poetry and stories.in times of political crisis they expressed and helped shape the views of their readership and thereby were major elements in changing political culture. Moreover in turkey the Moniteur ottoman was a gazette written in french and first published in 1831 on the order of mahmud the second. It was the first official gazette of the ottoman empire, edited by alexandre blacque at the expense of the sublime porte.
In USA in the 1800s mids, monthly magazines gained popularity. They were general interests to begin, containing some news, vignettes, poems, history, political events and social discussion.unlike newspapers, they were more of a monthly record of current events along with entertaining stories, poems and pictures. Then throughout the 20th century the magazines flourished even further more and were advertised as well as it was an era of mass media.
The mock covers i have made are related to music obviously,I’ve taken inspiration from big and renown magazines like billboard, vogue and etc. I was tempted to make a mock cover of Bruno mars as i came across a very stylish magazine which featured him as a famous artist.
I took this following picture from google and transformed it to a perfect mock cover which is below this original picture. All this was possible due to the excellence of the app canva.
my second mock cover is of Brenton urie from panic at the disco. He’s quite popular these days and i wanted to go for something different this time.
Here’s the original picture and the mock cover i made below
The video uploaded right above is the analysis of my questionnaire. Before getting on to the analysis of video i would like to go on about how i came up with the questionnaire. my magazine surrounds music and in specific the genre of hip hop.i came up with ten best questions and ended up making the questionnaire on survey monkey and circulated around through whats app.the response to the questionnaire was great and was of great help to determine my main idea of the magazine.
The feedback of the audience was great as i was able to know how their minds worked towards a music magazine. Most of my audience that filled the questionnaire had an idea of a music magazine and were very responsive to the questions.
Music comes in many different types and styles ranging from traditional rock music to world pop, easy listening and bluegrass. Many genres have a rich history or geographical significance, a cult following or music roots that go far beyond the 20th century.
Such genres are seen in the music of various artists, however they choose to whether carry on the same genre through different albums or singles or to change their genre and concepts each album. Panic at the disco is a renowned American pop rock band who chooses to have an emo concept. Hit singles include high hopes, this is gospel, i write sins not tragedies and death of a bachelor. As we can see how the titles of the songs gives this idea of rock and emo concept. However on the other hand since its formation evanescence has followed different genres like hip-hop, country, pop rock, jazz and etc.
Now for my magazine I have chosen the genre of hip-hop as it interests me more because of the tunes and visuals of the songs although every other genre of music is unique in its own way.
